Baccarat Martingale Strategy: Odds of Hitting the Cap
A $20,000 table cap stops a $15 Banker Martingale after 11 bets, and the 5% commission means a win after the fifth loss still leaves you behind.

A baccarat martingale strategy doubles the Banker bet after every loss so that one win recovers the whole series. It does not change the odds. The house keeps about 1.06 percent of every Banker dollar whatever the bet size, and a real table maximum stops the doubling after a fixed number of losses. At a $15 table with a $20,000 cap that means 11 bets, and the commission turns a win after the fifth loss into a net loss anyway.
What is a Martingale strategy in baccarat?
The Martingale is a negative progression: start with one base unit, double the stake after each loss and drop back to the base unit after a win. On paper the first win always restores everything lost in the series plus one unit, which is why it feels safe.
That promise rests on two assumptions, an even-money payout and unlimited doubling. Baccarat breaks both. The Banker bet pays less than even money, and every table publishes a maximum. Even Wizard of Odds warns readers against betting systems before they reach the casino.
Why players run the Martingale on the Banker bet
Banker is the usual choice because it wins most often. OLG's baccarat odds page says the Banker hand wins 45.8% of the time and the Player hand 44.6%, so ties account for the remaining 9.6%. It also has the lowest house edge of the three bets.
| Bet | Hand wins | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | 45.8% | 1.06% |
| Player | 44.6% | 1.24% |
| Tie | 9.6% | 14.36% |
The edges come from Wizard of Odds' baccarat basics; OLG gives the Tie bet the same very high house edge. A Martingale on Tie would need far longer losing runs to be covered, so the system lives on Banker.
How the 5% commission breaks the doubling
Winning Banker bets pay 19 to 20, which is even money less a 5% commission. The Venetian assesses that commission on every winning bank-side bet, and Cache Creek charges the same 5 percent, both as of October 2026. A $15 win therefore nets $14.25, and a doubled bet only recovers 95% of itself.
Run straight doubling from a $15 base and the net result of a Banker win at each point in the series looks like this:
| Bet this hand | Total staked so far | Net for the series if Banker wins |
|---|---|---|
| $15 | $15 | +$14.25 |
| $30 | $45 | +$13.50 |
| $60 | $105 | +$12.00 |
| $120 | $225 | +$9.00 |
| $240 | $465 | +$3.00 |
| $480 | $945 | -$9.00 |
| $960 | $1,905 | -$33.00 |
| $1,920 | $3,825 | -$81.00 |
| $3,840 | $7,665 | -$177.00 |
| $7,680 | $15,345 | -$369.00 |
| $15,360 | $30,705 | -$753.00 |
From the sixth bet on, a Banker win still leaves the series behind, because the commission on a $480 win ($24.00) is larger than the one-unit profit the system chases. Correcting for it means betting slightly more than double after each loss, which reaches the table maximum even sooner.
How many doublings fit under a table limit
The cap decides how long a series can run, not the bankroll alone. Red Rock Casino Resort lists baccarat limits from a $15 to $100 minimum up to a $20,000 maximum, as of October 2026.
- From a $15 base: 11 bets, from $15 up to $15,360. The next doubling would be $30,720, over the maximum. Losing all 11 costs $30,705.
- From a $100 base: 8 bets, from $100 up to $12,800. Losing all 8 costs $25,500.
Before a session, divide the table maximum by the base bet to see how many doublings fit, and treat the full-ladder loss as the price of the stop. The best a completed series can earn is $14.25 at the $15 base and $95 at the $100 base.
The probability of hitting the cap in a session
Setting ties aside, Player wins 44.6 of every 90.4 decided hands, so each Banker bet loses 49.3% of the time. Eleven straight losses has a probability of 0.042%, about 1 in 2,370 series. At the $100 base, 8 straight losses has a probability of 0.35%, about 1 in 285.
Rare per series, but a session strings many series together. The chance that a run long enough to hit the $15-base cap shows up at least once:
| Decided hands played | Chance of hitting the cap at least once |
|---|---|
| 100 | 1.9% |
| 200 | 4.0% |
| 500 | 10.0% |
| 1,000 | 19.1% |
Each completed series earns at most $14.25, and one capped series costs $30,705, so it takes more than 2,150 good series to pay for a single bad one.
Why the expected loss per hand never changes
The house edge applies to each dollar wagered, independent of the hands before it. At 1.06%, a $15 Banker bet costs about $0.16 on average and a $15,360 bet about $162.82. Earlier results do not shift the 45.8% and 44.6% split, so no sequence of bet sizes turns a negative expectation positive.
What the Martingale changes is the shape of the results: many small wins and an occasional very large loss. Because it raises the stake after every loss, it also raises total action, and the expected loss for a session grows with the total wagered.
Guide questions
Is baccarat actually 50/50?
No. Banker wins 45.8% of hands and Player 44.6%, with ties taking the remaining 9.6%. Banker's small lead is why it carries a commission, and both main bets still carry a house edge.
Can you give me an example of a martingale?
Bet $15 on Banker and lose, bet $30 and lose, bet $60 and win. The $60 win pays $57 after commission, minus the $45 already lost, so the series ends $12.00 ahead rather than the $15 a straight doubling promises.
Is there a 100% profitable martingale strategy?
No. Every bet carries the same house edge, and a table maximum ends the doubling after a fixed number of losses. A run long enough to reach the cap is rare in any single series but becomes likely across enough sessions.
Is there a better strategy than martingale?
No betting system changes the odds of the next hand. What a player controls is which bet to make and how much to wager in total: Banker has the lowest edge, and smaller total action means a smaller expected loss.
Can you make a living off the martingale strategy?
No. Its expected value is negative on every hand, so the long-run result is a loss proportional to the money wagered, punctuated by occasional full-ladder losses that wipe out many small wins.
